To treat a cavity, your dentist will remove the decayed portion of the tooth and then “fill” the area on the tooth where the decay was. Fillings are also used to repair cracked, broken or injured teeth and teeth that have been worn down from nail-biting, tooth grinding or other misuse.
Teeth can be filled with white porcelain, silver amalgam or a white glass material called composite resin fillings. Your dentist’s recommendation helps determine the type of filling that will best address your needs. General considerations include the extent and location of the decay, the cost of the filling material, and your insurance coverage.
To maintain your fillings you should follow good oral hygiene practices and visit your dentist regularly for cleanings. Additionally, make sure to brush with a toothpaste containing fluoride, and floss at least once daily.
If your dentist suspects that a filling might be cracked, he or she will take x-rays to assess the situation. If your tooth is extremely sensitive, you feel a sharp edge, you notice a crack in the filling, or a piece of the filling is missing, call your dentist for an appointment.
At Park Ridge Dentistry, we offer several options of affordably priced fillings. Our quality fillings help you prevent more serious dental health issues and painful dental emergencies down the road.
Dr. May was very great! The filling he put in was done so quickly with zero pain. He worked with the staff to make me feel calm and explained everything he was doing. (shout out to Jasmine as well!). He is a great addition and I look forward to seeing him for years to come.
First time visitor and had a very good experience. Dr. May is a very good doctor and was able to help me in a short amount of time.
I’ve been going to Dr. Barrett for almost 30 years, and he’s always made me feel at ease, to the point where I enjoy going to the dentist. Now Dr. Barrett is at the point in his career where he’s decided to bring in a new dentist to allow himself to take more time off. I was a little hesitant in the idea of having a new dentist work on my teeth, but as it turns out Dr Barrett hired an excellent choice in dentist to help with the patient load. Dr. May did an excellent job with my recent visit. He made the entire experience as comfortable as I could expect. I highly recommend both Dr. Barrett and Dr. May.
